1) What’s the one movie you’ve seen more times than any other?
It would have to be a toss between Below and Deep Rising. They may not be quality movies, but they are fun to watch.
2) If you could turn one book, comic book or other print story into a feature-length movie, what story would you pick and why?
I would love to put Ancient Images by Ramsey Campbell on the screen. Not only does the book have a female main character but also features a gay couple as a couple who are also gay (as opposed to making it a big deal). The novel has all the spookiness, things that go pump in the night, and dark mood that would make a good atmosphere piece. The story revolves around an old unreleased film starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff called Tower of Fear, a perfectly plausible film that would be a goldmine if it existed, but one that has a dark, almost Lovecraftian secret behind it that leaves a trial of blood, horror, and dead bodies to a small town that would make ‘Salem’s Lot look hospitable.
3) Whom would you cast?
For the main character (I can’t recall her name, but she is a film producer) I would cast Cate Blanchett. After her performances in The Gift, The Missing, and The Shipping News (all fine movies), she would be a natural to play the strong though frightened lead.
4) What one movie would you like to see “updated for the year 2005″? (Ie, a remake)
The Keep from the novel by F. Paul Wilson (link to his new site). Though Michael Mann (of Miami Vice fame) did an excellent job of creating a horror film that not only explored the horrors of war as well as the monster, I’m always left with the feeling that the horror aspect was played down too much and the ending was a bit too flashy and strayed too far from the book. In the movie, everything was final, but in the books The Keep was just the beginning of the Adversary (or as some call it Nightworld) cycle.
Side note: if anyone has a extra copy of The Tomb (which by the way is under development as a movie by Beacon Films), my birthday is at the end of this month… hint, hint.
5) What one movie are you most looking forward to this year?
What else is everyone looking forward to, the new Star Wars movie. I also have a long list of other movies, mostly horror, that I would love to see this year as well.
Do your Friday Five.
