What a day #20456

   Posted by: Yoggie    in Personal

I am exhausted and the day isn’t even over.  I had to take my wife to the emergency room this morning because she fell and sprained her ankle.  Luckily, it wasn’t a life threatening problem as it took them two hours to see her.  Okay, you are saying that they were just swamped with more pressing emergency. Nope, I would have understood that, but there were no other patients.  No one in the emergency room. No one had been in the emergency room for over 10 hours.  No one had been admitted in 26 hours.  This had to be the slowest day at any hospital on the planet.  I mean I would expect maybe a woman in labor, some accident victim, sick child, or something, but the place was dead.  Even the nurse commented how dead it was.

But it still took two hours just to admit my wife, and we have insurance so that wasn’t a reason for delay.

New President

Posted by: Yoggie    in Important Events, News, Uncategorized

Barack H. Obama is now our 44th president.  I was watching on CNN.com and using the Facebook interface to keep up with friends who watch of television.  I have to say that the speech was inspiring, something along the lines I would have expected JFK to make had he been elected today.

The President has a long, hard road ahead of him.

Did anyone notice how quiet it was when ‘W’ came out as opposed to the fan-fair that greeted Obama?

And I could swear that the justice of the peace swearing in Obama had the oath of office wrong, though Obama said them in the correct order.  I’ll have to check the recording on my TV.

Football, what football?

Posted by: Yoggie    in Sports, TV and TV Reviews

I was informed by my wife yesterday evening that we will be watching the Philadelphia Eagles at the Arizona Cardinals NFC Championship game and the Baltimore Ravens at the Pittsburgh Steelers AFC Championship game.  Reason given:  it is going to snow at both places.  I think she forgot that the Cardinal’s stadium is a dome, though it does have that cool retractable playing field.

You mean it is not still Christmas?

   Posted by: Yoggie    in Personal

Don’t you just hate those people who leave their Christmas decorations up way past Christmas and New Year’s Day. It is understandable that you leave them up until the weekend of/after Epiphany (January 6 or January 19 depending on calendar, church, or who you ask) as some families have that as the traditional end of the holiday season.  With my parents (as with most families in my childhood-years geographical location), we took down Christmas decorations the weekend after Christmas (they went up the weekend before) which was a sign that Christmas vacation was almost over.  Yeah, when I was a kid, Christmas school vacation started the day before Christmas eve and we had to report back to school on weekday closest to January 2.

The tradition with my family is to keep decorations up until Epiphany which my wife has set as January 6.  The date must be a local tradition as I had never even heard of Epiphany before I met my wife.  All this means is that I get my ass up early on the weekend after January 6 and take down the decorations… by my lonesome… as in everyone else is sleeping late… and I have my own system of re-packing decorations.

And you are saying, what the hell does that have to do with anything?  Well, Mr. Smartypants, it mean that just now finished taking down and packing the decorations.  Yes, the weekend after the weekend after January 6, a new record for leaving decorations up. Next year I am going for broke and waiting until the weekend after the Superbowl to take them down.

Goodbye America, and good riddance

Posted by: Yoggie    in Wistful Meanderings

I was checking the TV schedule for tonight and found that the President is giving a 15 minute farewell speech at 8:00 tonight (at least one network claims it is 15 minutes).  I guess this is last ditch attempt to make is terms in office end on a positive note.  I’m guessing he will say something about how he felt honored to be the President and mention some of the “good” things he did. At least that is what he will probably say.  He will probably be thinking “Goodbye suckers.  Thank God I don’t have to listen to y’all whine anymore”.

I don’t really care.  I’ll be watching the new episodes of Smallville and Supernatural.

The loss of two M’s

Posted by: Yoggie    in News, TV and TV Reviews

The death of two great actors, Ricardo Montalban and Patrick McGohan, was reported today.

Patrick McGoohan died Tuesday.  He is probably best known as captured agent Number Six in the enigmatic TV series The Prisoner and in scores of movies, including Braveheart and Ice Station Zero, and TV series, Danger Man and Rafferty, using playing intelligent and well bred characters.

Ricardo Montalban died Wednesday.  He is usually remembered as the mysterious Mr. Roarke on the original Fantasy Island and as Khan in Star Trek II:  The Wrath of Khan.  He also worked in various TV projects and movies and was a vocal advocate for acting roles for persons of Spanish-speaking origin.

Are you sure it is not Friday the 13th

Posted by: Yoggie    in Wistful Meanderings

Is there some unknown curse on Tuesday the 13th?  There must be and here is my reasoning…

  • My son is sick.
  • One of the tires on my car blew out on a long stretch of highway miles from any civilization and the donut does not fit my car.
  • My car fell off the jack and got stuck under the car (this just after I found out the donut does not fit).
  • The only tow service available was the most expensive one.
  • I finally get to the tire store and they don’t have my tire (which turned out to be good since they had a cheaper tire in stock).
  • I was informed that the three other tires are in need of replacing.
  • The battery died in my car because I had the emergency flashers on (it was recharged at the tire store).
  • I ran out of checks and I don’t have my ATM card.
  • The state patrol is stopping cars looking for something… or someone (maybe these guys).  Not a biggie but it makes me even later for work.
  • All this happens before 10 am.
  • The fridge at work is now leaking.
  • My wife, who is at home looking after our sick child, tried to burn the house down by lighting a fire in the chimney without opening the flue (okay, so it was just smoky and triggered the bazillion million fire alarms we have in the house). Unfortunately, she pulled some other lever that I know nothing about before finding the flue lever so I will have to check the fireplace when I get home, a fireplace I might add that has a fire in it.  Which means…
  • We will be out of firewood when I get home, so I’ll have to chop and split wood in the dark.  (I know you are thinking, don’t you have central heating?  Yes, we do it is that the fireplace makes the house warmer without using a electricity with the added bonus of the that the fireplace is just above floor level and keeps the footsies warm.)

Yes, I’ve had a bad day so far.

Monday of the High Seas Internet

Posted by: Yoggie    in Wistful Meanderings

We are on the second Monday in 2009 and it feels like we should already be in mid-2010!  The weekend goes too fast, but the work week goes slower than a “retarded glacier“.  Is it because I actually took some vacation time just before Christmas?  Is it because we are on hold with so many projects awaiting approval?  Are the Old Ones coming back to play hockey with Detroit auto makers?

Bored? No, I have plenty to do, but I want to go home.  I guess I could play with my Rubik’s Cube.  Too bad you can’t make money by sitting at home… no, I’m talking good money, like in triple digits dollars an hour without scamming people and is not illegal. I guess I could play the lottery and win big, but I’m not a virgin.
