Happy Father’s Day 2009

   Posted by: Yoggie    in Holidays

I had all this I planned to say today about Father’s Day and about our relationship with our families but, like everything else I don’t jot down immediately, I’ve forgotten most of it and I am really tired from the party yesterday (that went into the wee hours of the morning).  Let me just wish the other fathers out there a Happy Father’s Day and remind them to spend at least some of the day with their families… you never know how long you will have them or how long you will be around to enjoy them.

Call to do what with Iran?

Posted by: Yoggie    in Blurred Opinion, Politics

Republicans are all up in arms about the President not taking a more active and harsh role in what is happening in Iran concerning the election protests.  It seems that the Republicans don’t think Obama is wording is responses about the Iran crisis harsh enough and that the U.S. needs to take the lead in getting the people of Iran free and fair elections.  I have some problems with the Republicans and all those others that say we are wussy-footing when it is coming to Iran…

  • Exactly what are we supposed to do?  Iran is a sovereign country with its own laws, constitution, and government.  It may not be the democracy that we enjoy, but it is the system the people of Iran put in place.  I agree that they should be allowed to protest and all, but we can just go in and make the government do anything.
  • Are statements are not harsh enough?  What do you want?  “We will attack if you don’t recount" type of response? We have enough of an image problem in Iran as it is, we don’t need to reinforce the idea put forth by the Iranian government that the U.S. is a war-mongering blowhard.  Supporting the people’s right to assemble and protest, letting them know that we sympathize with their plight is all we can do.
  • If we do or say anything more, the Iranian government will accuse us of interfering with a sovereign nation’s  elections and just re-enforce that bad taste that the U.S. has left in the mouths of those still supporting the government.  Any perceived involvement, if it is real or not, will only hurt the protestors and brand their movement as a covert U.S. operation.  Not only would we ostracize Iran even further, but our tenuous relations with other Middle East nations will be in jeopardy.

I don’t want these nay-sayers to not express their opinion on how Obama is handling the situation, but I do wish they would think before they talk.

Like most people, I look forward to some rest and relaxation during the weekend.  Not a great deal, mind you, just a little.  After the yard work, cleaning, etc, I usually plan to just sit back and relax, maybe watch some TV, read, you know, the simple stuff that helps you unwind.  Lately that has not been the case.  There is always something coming up that we “have to do”.  This weekend is a birthday, Father’s Day, and out of town relatives visiting.  I can look forward to having maybe five minutes to myself all weekend.

Did I forget to mention that is is oppressively hot and all of the activities planned are outside?

  • They are still having protest, government sanctioned and not, due to the elections in Iran.  So who is taking bets that all this will blow over and nothing will change?
  • People are still clogging the courts with frivolous and stupid, namely the one going before the Supreme Court today arguing that President Obama cannot be legally president because some jerks still don’t believe that the birth certificates are genuine.  No, this is not a repeat of November 2008 and December 2008 though it is the same guy leading the assault.  I wonder if the justices will throw stuff at the litigators this time when they throw the case out of court yet again.
  • Test on biofuels for airplanes has gone surprisingly well.  In fact, biofuels seem to work better than current jet fuel.  Problem is that it would currently take the whole of Germany’s land mass to grow the source for the bio part of the fuel. The biofuel test does bring to light the fact that the fuel actually has a colder freezing temperature than currently used fuel.  To top it all off, the test were done as “drop-in” which means no modifications to engines will be needed.
  • North Korea is still saying that they will launch a test missile toward Hawaii.  Is it just me or is the North Korean government just trying to piss off everyone in the world?  Even Russia and China have told North Korea to stop.
  • Remember the Palin “scandal” that one of the daughter’s had a baby out of wedlock?  Remember the baby-daddy (Levi Johnston) did not end up marrying the girl though the parents were adamant that he would?  Well, he has now decided he needs more than his allotted 15 minutes of fame and has hired a manager/bodyguard and is poised to take on the world as “Ricky Hollywood”.  Yeah, we really needed him to come blazing back into the limelight and impregnating more political hopefuls’ daughters.

Wednesday if full of iTune stars

Posted by: Yoggie    in Wistful Meanderings

No, I haven’t got a clue what the title means either but it was better than the original “Monkey spits purple hair into Pepsi drains”.

Is it obvious that I am either too tired to come up with some witty post about something that tickles my gray matter for the minute or that I am too bored to come up with an insightful look into today’s politics.  Yeah, my brain is full of mush today and I’ve felt like I had a hangover all day without the benefit of getting drunk.  Sometimes topics either don’t come or they just don’t garner enough energy to be worthwhile for publishing and I come up with post like this one that is about nothing and serves no other purpose than typing a bunch of words so that I can keep up with my depressing nihilistic narcissism.  And that is what is the root of most blogging – narcissism.  Some are not as obvious and others blogs are truly formed with some other goal in mind, but really, if we bloggers weren’t a little narcissistic we wouldn’t be doing this in the first place.

Of course some of us, me especially, are full blown loonies with overactive typing fingers.

Soapbox June 16, 2009

  • Healthcare – Yes, we need to do something about the healthcare availability and the lack thereof.  I do not agree that this is, as one doctor put it, a matter for politicians not government.  Politicians are going to skirt the issue for as long as possible and then give a solution that helps only those who donate the most money.  We need a solution that allows everyone to get healthcare, preventative treatments, medical help, etc and not depend on what the insurance companies are willing the meter out.  We spend more per person on healthcare than anyone in the world yet we still have some of the poorest care available.  What is so wrong about the government single payer idea?  Everyone else uses it with great success.  And don’t start with the stories about how bad is government-run healthcare, most of those stories are false to begin with and the others do not tell the whole truth.  We never hear about the resounding success stories like the woman just recently on a story for Morning Edition on NPR that opted to live in Canada because she could afford and receive the care she needed that she was denied in the U.S. through her private insurance.
  • Iran’s elections – Seems that the people of Iran are finding out just how free they are really.  In Iran, the only rallies allowed are the ones sanctioned and sponsored by the Iranian government, the protesters of the election are being fired upon and arrested. Reporters are banned from the streets, media is being censored even more than before, internet access in Iran is reduced and at times outright banned. Even before the elections were held, social networking sites were closed to the Iranian people (who have the highest percentage of web-connected people in the Middle East) especially those that supported the opposition to the current President.  The former Vice-president that was a supporter of reform has been reported arrested by Iranian police forces. This is a prime example of what happens when church runs the state. Remember that when you want more religious-centric legislation in the U.S.

School Days, School Days

1. What was your favorite class/subject in school?
Believe it or not Industrial Arts classes. With the ability to whiz by without even trying in basic and advanced academic courses, the only thing challenging was IA.

2. Who was your favorite teacher?
My seventh grade English teacher with whom I still have a crush.

3. Why was your favorite teacher your favorite?
As I mentioned, I had a crush on her. Yeah, I tended to think with my other organs when my brain was bored.

4. What would you have liked to major in in college? Or what will you major in if you go to college?
I major first in Secondary Education, then Mathematics, and finally in Computer Science.

5. Would you rather go to a small, medium, or large college, if you had the money to go to any of the three?
I went to what was at the time two medium colleges. They have since grown considerably.
