Apology accepted

   Posted by: Yoggie

This letter is rumored to be in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Since I don’t have one handy, I’ll have to take it on faith that the person who sent this was legit….

Dear Falcons Fans:

A 1-6 record so far is not what any of us anticipated at the beginning of the season. We understand the frustration you feel. In fact, everyone at the Falcons organization shares it. We are disappointed – even angry. We know our team is capable of playing better.

Our coaches, our players, our staff, and I collectively share the responsibility for the outcome of this season. We’re not giving up. Our goal is the same as yours: to win football games. We have nine more games in this season, and our commitment to you is to work as hard as we possibly can to win every one of them.

I want you to know that I am just as committed to taking this franchise to the heights of NFL success as I have been from the very start. Not just this season, but every season. If anything, I am more committed and determined than ever.

For the last year and a half, you have rallied around the New Atlanta Falcons in a way that exceeded our expectations. Our organization and team need your continued support, and we will do everything we can to maintain it. We need you, our 12th man.

Thank you for being a part of our team. Let’s continue to rally together.

Arthur M. Blank

P.S. – It seems that it is legit. The website for the 11 Alive News on WXIA-TV in Atlanta, GA has an article on it.

Show how you feel about the Falcons by responding to the poll by the 11 Alive WXIA-TV website.

No joy in Mudville

As Herman Munster is wont to say “Darn! Darn! Darn! Darn!”. The Cubs lost last night so they will not be heading to the World Series. If the Sox don’t win their playoff, I will not be watching the World Series this year. Seeing the Yankees and the Marlins fight over the title is just not interesting to me. We’ll see tonight.

On another note, I have decide that I am gonna try to complete this years National Novel Writing Month. If you are unfamiliar with it, in the month of November you attempt to write a 50,000 word novel. That’s it. I’ve never tried anything like this before so wish me luck. Let see if I can be creative enough to pull it off.

More on last night

   Posted by: Yoggie

I was so sleepy last night that I didn’t even comment on the big bungle made by the umpiring crew on last night’s game between the Braves and the Cubs. With no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Gary Sheffield hit a liner into center field where Kenny Lofton was playing deep. Lofton slid and made a clean catch that was ruled a trap by the left field umpire. Marcus Giles was running back to first thinking that the ball was ruled an out even though Rafael Furcal had left second and was rounding third when Lofton threw the ball toward second hoping to double up Furcal. If the ball had been called caught, then Furcal would have been out, but since the ball was ruled a trap then Giles was forced out. During the confusion, Furcal scored. Now Giles was complaining because the first base umpire had rule the ball a fair catch, therefor Giles would have to go back and tag and Furcal would have been out. Either way, the disparity between the umpires’ calls made everyone on the field confused and resulted in outs that should not have happened and may have colored the outcome of the game.

Lofton caught the ball, no doubt about it. The wrong umpire made the call. The other umpires refused to give any help in what was going on. There were two umpires with differing calls which resulted in none of the players knowing what was going on. There was mass confusion which generally tainted the game and left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth.

There needs to be a better system in reporting what the umpires call through out the field. There are too many umpires calling on the same play. The players need a quick and decisive verdict on every play of the ball since action happens quickly.

I don’t have a readily available solution, but one must be found before the start of the next season to prevent another occurance of last night. And don’t suggest video review, the game takes long enough as it is. I see nothing wrong in creating a post-game review and having the game replayed in it’s entirety. Something like last night’s call can change the outcome of a game. The out could have rallied the Braves to take the lead and win the game or just left the Braves scoreless.

What’s done is done, so I going with the Cubs to win the World Series.

Aw phooey!

The Braves lost just now 5 to 1 to the Cubs ending the Braves’ season. On the bright side, it seems the curse may be over for the Chicago Cubs as they win their first post-season series in 95 years.

Good luck to the Cubs as they host the Florida Marlins Tuesday in the National League Championship series. I hope the Cubs go all the way this year.

Oh cool! “The Mysterious Doctor” is on Turner Classic Movies right now.

Wet pants

   Posted by: Yoggie

Tampa Bay is really beating up on Philadelphia 17 to 0 with 6 minutes left in the 4th.

And what do they talk about? The centers’s wet pants and how he likes to change his uniform during the game.

The Braves’ magic number is now 7. They may clinch this week!

The Atlanta Falcons beat Green Bay at Green Bay in Green Bay weather! And then the 49′ers came back and beat the NY Giants! What a wild weekend. Maybe this is the Falcon’s year.

Note for today… actor Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean, Blackadder, Zazu from Disney’s “The Lion King” movies) turns 48 today. Happy birthday Mr. Atkinson!

Thanks to Gretchen Pirillo, one beautiful lady, for being the first to comment. Make a point to visit her blog.
