Was I just naive back then?

   Posted by: Yoggie

I was walking through my den the yesterday and caught site of what my son was watching, SWAT Kats.  For those of you who don’t remember or don’t know, SWAT Kats was a animated series that once ran on TBS and was about this crime fighting/heroic duo of anamorphic felines (called kats) who were junkyard owners when not saving Megakat City. A pretty standard action cartoon that ran from 1993 to 1995 that had an interesting way of animating the characters.  It is not to say that the animation was all that good, it was fairly standard type of animation for its time, it was the difference in how the genders were animated.  All of the male cats were almost regular cartoon cats that walked on two legs where as the female cats all look more or less human.  In fact, if you didn’t know the females were supposed to be cats you would swear they just had bizarre skin colors.  Which leads into what I saw last night.

I never paid much attention the show when it first aired and only caught a few episodes.  It seems the one that aired last night I missed entirely.  The episode featured a female villain by the name of Turmoil, a character bent of world domination with her ship full of female soldiers.

As you can see, Turmoil is quite an attractive (by anime standards) platinum-blond female at looks nothing like a feline.  What you don’t see (I don’t have a screen grab of) is the quasi-Nazi uniform she is wearing and the fact that she has porn star body proportions (big boobs, wide hips, tiny waist, and about 70% thin legs).  For a moment there I thought I was watching a lost scene from Heavy Metal.  And yes, she had the sexy commanding voice. Did I mention that the uniform was skin tight? Anime-uniform-furry fetish people would go nuts over this character.  I can just image the volume of animation porn centered around the character Turmoil. And with a ship full of similarly uniformed females.  Yep, I think some animators were sneaking in some cheesecake if not downright erotic fantasies.

Luckily my son is too young to really notice how provocative the character is drawn.

And now that I have ruined your childhood……

Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead

   Posted by: Yoggie

One of three or four Doctor Who specials that are taking the place of regular season episodes (first Torchwood then Doctor Who, what’s next The Sarah Jane Adventures?), the first being the Christmas special The New Doctor and the second airing tonight on BBC America called Planet of the Dead, the third, The Waters of Mars, is coming soon.  These specials are to serve as the swan song on the current Doctor and to lead the way to a proposed Doctor Who movie (with the current Doctor played by David Tennant) and the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith).

I stupidly thought the show was coming on at 9 PM Eastern, but I was wise enough to set the time based on the name of the episode so when I turned on the tele I didn’t miss the show.  In my opinion the episode was pretty good, the story was solid, most of the plot holes patched up before the end of the show, and the character interactions (between The Doctor and Lady Christina de Souza, the other actors barely existed in the script).  The story gives an open end to a possible revisit of the main protagonist later.  I loved the hero worshiping scientist.

Will Torchwood survive?

   Posted by: Yoggie

Tonight is the last part of the Torchwood: Children of Earth miniseries.  So far it has been pretty interesting with some twists and turns I don’t usually expect from the writers of Torchwood and Doctor Who.  I really can’t go into any details as there are probably many people who still haven’t seen the miniseries.  Let’s just say that I am happy with the show, but I’m not too happy with the direction it seems to be going.  I guess I will reserve my judgment on miniseries until after the final episode has aired.

See y’all later, I’m watching Torchwood.

Update:  I am impressed.  We learn a lot about Jack in this episode, even to the extremes he is willing to go when the need arises.  It really seems that the ending was written too much to elicit a particular response than actual drama or story.  All in all, the miniseries was good and I can see why it did so well in the U.K.  I hope that another season of Torchwood is going to happen.

Torchwood: Children of Earth

   Posted by: Yoggie

Has anyone been watching Torchwood: Children of Earth on BBC America this week?  It is the 5-day miniseries that is taking place of a regular season of Torchwood and it is running Monday through Friday of this week.  The plot is that some alien force is mind controlling the children of Earth and sending cryptic messages and it has something to do with an incident in the 1960’s.  The first two episodes were okay, though it seems that it was a bit plodding at times.  I guess you have to lay the groundwork for the big finish and sometimes it takes a bit of background and exposition to get to that point. I’ll stick with the miniseries until the end.

Of course I could look at Eve Myles and John Barrowman the whole time.

It is not over, BSG will live again.

   Posted by: Yoggie

It seems that after the current series has ended and the future 2-hour special is over, the rights to Battlestar Galactica may spawn another re-imaging of the franchise. No, I’m not talking about the series Carpica, which is only based on the current BSG universe and before the final Cylon attack and is basically a soap opera, I am talking about a new version of the old BSG.

According to an IGN article and backed up by other sources, a movie is in the works to bring Glen A. Larson and his vision of BSG to the big screen not unlike earlier incarnations.  From the rumors, some confirmed by IGN, we will be getting a new version of the original show, a more space opera/Star Wars/Star Trek action/adventure movie or movies with a potential for a spin-off series.  This wouldn’t be a first for the franchise, so far both incarnations started out as pilots/movies one-shots with the hope of a series pickup with the first having limited theatrical releases before the decision was made and the second series pilot more of a test of audience reaction to the re-imaging.

I for one am excited about a new action oriented blasters-a-blasting and metal Cylons red Pong-like eye in a movie or series.

Farewell BSG… almost

   Posted by: Yoggie

I had a prior engagement yesterday so I couldn’t catch the final 2 hour episode of Battlestar Galactica.  It wasn’t until tonight that I had the chance to watch the DVR and I have to say I liked what I saw.  Most of the questions were answered and a resolution was presented that didn’t leave the audience in a lurch.  There are a few questions lingering which sounds like they are going to be resolved in the 2 hour special later this year called Battlestar Galactica: The Plan.

Warning! Spoilers after the break! Do not go farther if you haven’t seen the episode.

Welcome February 2009

   Posted by: Yoggie

As you have probably heard by now, the Pittsburgh Steelers have won the Super Bowl (27-23 over the Arizona Cardinals).  The game was pretty good this year, going down to the last few seconds of the game with some exciting touchdowns and offensive/defensive maneuverings.   The commercials were okay.  I like the one about the moon buggy and the homage to the old Coke Mean Joe Green commercial.

Snacks were consumed at my house, as well as some chili, but not in great quantities. No one seemed hungry.

Next up, March Madness.

Friday night at last

   Posted by: Yoggie

Thank God this day is almost over, it has been a stressful and busy one.  With all the doctor visits, work, and filling out forms, I am exhausted.

It seems the cold weather has taken a break for the next few days as we will locally be getting lows in the 40′s this weekend with high’s in the upper 50′s and 60′s. Unfortunately, it is going to rain all weekend.

My wife is doing better.  She still can’t get around very well, but she doesn’t have a broken foot but a torn muscle.  The problem is that she is terrible with crutches so I have to wheel her around everywhere.

Warning!  Battlestar Galactica spoilers ahead from the episodes of the past two weeks if you haven’t seen them.

Does it seem to anyone else that Battlestar Galactica is just spinning its tires.  There was so much more that could be done with the blasted Earth scenario and Starbuck’s situation that could have been at least hinted at this week, but the episode dwelled on a rising rebellion.  It just seems that everyone has given up and is taking everything at face value.  Why are there “supposedly” two Starbucks?  How did Starbuck get back if her ship was destroyed and her body in the burnt husk?  Why was “Earth” populated by organic Cylons and a model of Centurions that are different from any known model?  How did the organic Cylons get to the part of space with the Twelve Colonies?  Why were there organic Cylons 2,000 years after the Cylons were invented in the Colonies?  There is not a whole lot of episodes left to answer these questions.

Football, what football?

   Posted by: Yoggie

I was informed by my wife yesterday evening that we will be watching the Philadelphia Eagles at the Arizona Cardinals NFC Championship game and the Baltimore Ravens at the Pittsburgh Steelers AFC Championship game.  Reason given:  it is going to snow at both places.  I think she forgot that the Cardinal’s stadium is a dome, though it does have that cool retractable playing field.
